Breed Traits

The Lakenvelder breed is a flighty breed that prefers to roost in our trees rather in the coops here at the farm. Lakenvelders are excellent foragers when they are free ranged, but can handle confinement well. They have white skin, slate legs, and a small single comb. Smaller in stature, hens mature at 4-5 pounds and are bred primarily for egg production.

Breed History

Lakenvelders are an old breed that has its roots in the Egyptian Fayoumi breed.  The Lakenvelders that we see today were developed in the 1830’s in Germany. The actual name of the breed comes from the striking white and black coloration that was popular in the Lakervelt region of Holland.
