Second only to the Dominique, the Java is one of the oldest chickens developed in America. There is evidence of the Java as far back as 1835, though it's possible it may have been in development much earlier than that. It was admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1883. The Java has been used in breeding some of our other favorite All-American breeds such as the Rhode Island Red, Jersey Giant, and Plymouth Rock. Unfortunately, the popularity of these newer breeds has caused breed conservationists some alarm with respects to the Java.
