Breed Traits

Chickens with a single frizzle gene grow feathers that curl out and forwards, rather than lying flat on their body. Frizzled genes can occur in many breeds, standard and bantam sizes, including Cochins, Polish, Silkies, Pekins and more. Their personalities, productivity, egg color, and hardiness directly correspond to their breed and have nothing to do with their frizzled gene.

Breed History

Frizzles are believed to have originated in Asia. They are not a breed of chicken, but rather Frizzles are chickens that carry the frizzle gene, which is a mutated gene. To breed for Frizzles, it is imperative to mate a Frizzled chicken with a non-frizzled, or smooth-feathered chicken. Mating two Frizzles together will create offspring with a pair of frizzle genes which causes their feathers to be overly curled and dry. As a result, the offspring are sparsely feathered or their feathers are exceedingly brittle and broken, so they look like they’ve been plucked!
