Breed Traits

The Dorking is an exceptional dual purpose bird, laying consistently through the winter, but also having virtually no competition when considering it's quality of meat. Dressed for the table, the birds have excellent quality and tender meat, with noticeably more flesh in the wings and breast. Dorkings are also one of the best mothers, going broody quite often, staying with their chicks much longer than other breeds, and welcoming chicks from other mothers.

Breed History

The Dorking chicken has literary references dating all the way back to the Roman Empire, making it one of the most ancient domesticated breeds in all poultry. The Romans brought the Dorking, their beloved table bird, to Great Britain where it was further developed in the counties of Kent, Sussex and Surrey, but named after the town of Dorking.
