Breed Traits
Brahmas are a large, feather footed breed. They're an extra large, heavy breed with feathered shanks and lightly feathered feet. They have small red wattles and a pea comb. Next to Cochins and Jersey Giants, Brahmas are one of the largest breeds of chickens.
Despite their size, Brahmas are particularly gentle. They are docile, mellow, and friendly; and are a favorite among families with kids, especially when raised from a young age.
They are decent layers of large, light brown eggs; and will seldom go broody.
Breed History
Brahmas originated in Brahmaputra, India. Because of their size and calm temperament, when brought to the United States they quickly gained popularity and became standardized by the American Poultry Association. It is believed that their genetics may be linked back to the Cochin.
