Breed Traits

The Andalusian is a very rare breed whose only color variety recognized by the American Poultry Association is the Blue Andalusian, and is often referred to by that name. The modern Blue Andalusian has white skin, a single comb, and blue feathering laced by a thin line of darker blue.

Blue Andalusians are active foragers and make for great backyard chickens. They are fairly docile and calm.

This breed is not a great egg layer but should give you about 160 large white eggs per year. They do not often go broody. One benefit of a Blue Andalusian is their ability to lay consistently through fall and winter.

When a Blue Andalusian rooster is mated with a Blue Andalusian hen, the result is 50% Blue Andalusians, 25% Black Andalusians, and 25% Splash Andalusians (white with some blue).

Breed History

The breed originated in the Andalucia region of Spain and is often likened to the body type and personality of the Minorca. However, they are less noisy and flighty than most Mediterranean breeds.
