Newbie disclaimer! I was wondering what in the world was going on with the feathering around one of my easter-eggers ears.. Then a saw a photo of ameraucanas and araucanas and and saw that that's a trademark of their "look". So now I can stop worrying that she has wackadoo feathering! LOL.. just had to share.

We're having our first heatwave here in SCAL this week. I've started giving them electrolyte water in addition to their apple cider vinegar water (separate feeders). I bought a "mister" to attach to the garden hose -- pointing it towards the coop hoping to lower the coop temperature a bit and I have a UV Shade cover cloth over the coop as well. Treats have been dandelions and grape leaves and some melon and strawberries. WHAT TIPS can you share to keep the hens comfortable during these awful (85-95 days)?

I have a large dog exercise pen like the one pictured below that I will eventually use as a mobile run Note: I will cover it for predictor safety and sun protection. This is for modified free-ranging once they learn that "coop" is home base! Question: How do I get the chickens to leave the coop (I have the Raised Durango with attached run) and move in an orderly fashion into the pen area ? Something tells me I'll have to move them one at a time by picking them up. Ideas ? I presume that by allowing them to forage close to dusk, they will go back to their coop on their own afterwards.

Is there an official description of people that raise hens for eggs and as pets? Is it chicken farmer?

Hi - I'm happy to connect with any new or established chicken folks in my area that might want to chat. I just got my first pullets in late May (they're around 10 weeks old now). Learning as I go... friends going through the same experience are good to have.

Any tips or signs of concern to look for when introducing new pullets (several weeks apart). I have three and introduced a fourth yesterday. Kept her separate but close for the day and brought her into the coop with the others at night. Today, the three established hens are "putting baby in a corner". I've got multiple food/water sources around and listening for any obnoxious behavior. Trying to let them work it out... Any thoughts on how long it may take for them to "all get along"? Update: I just found your article http://www.dare2dreamfarms.com/pecking-order . Hoping it doesn't take 2 weeks! ;-(
