I have had my coop for about a year and figure it's time for a big cleanup. I clean the nesting boxes monthly but have not removed the ground material or washed down all the wood.
Any ideas on what the best ground material I should use? Right now it's basically dirt but have heard that river sand is the best for the floor of the coop. I also need to clean all the wood and the "attic" area they sneak up too and poop up there!
Any suggestions would be helpful!

Hey! First off, I like your coop! Also, sand seems to be the favorite for ground material in the coop. You can use river sand or construction sand. Both are well draining, easy for the chickens to turn, and easy to rake when it comes cleaning time. You'll probably need about 4-6 inches of it. Some clean it like a kitty litter box. Others report that when it gets wet the droppings wash thru with the water. It's also great for doing evaporative cooling in the coop on hot days.
