Breed Traits

Speckled Sussex are gorgeous and unique looking chickens. Speckled Sussex have mahogany feathers are accented with glossy black and tipped with white, which gives them the ‘speckled’ look, almost as if they had been splashed with white paint. They have a single comb. Other color varieties of the Sussex breed include Light, Buff, Silver, Brown, and Red. They grow to be a somewhat large and heavy bird.

This breed is very easy to keep. They do not demand much attention, and will generally keep themselves busy as they are curious and active. They are also very gentle and friendly, so these are great chickens for beginners and for kids!

Breed History

The Sussex breed was a popular table bird in and around Sussex, England, for many years and was acclaimed internationally by travelers to England for it's tender and juicy flesh. Unfortunately, with the introduction of Asiatic fowl to England, so many flocks were crossed so frequently and without care that the birds all looked different, and the original breed nearly died out. In 1903 a club was finally formed for the Sussex, and poultry enthusiasts began seeking out small flocks of pure breeds to repopulate and promote the nearly extinct breed.
