Sultan chickens are bred for their distinguishing characteristics as exhibition birds. They have a v-shaped red comb, large nostrils, a full crest, face muffling including a beard, vulture hocks, profuse shank and toe feathering, and a fifth toe on each foot. They are a slightly smaller bird with hens filling out at approximately 4 pounds, and roosters reaching about 6 pounds.
Breed History
Sultans are primarily an ornamental breed of poultry that originated in Southeastern Europe and found favor with Turkish rulers. They were first recognized by the American Poultry Association in 1874.
