Breed Traits
The Rhode Island White, although created from different breeds than the Rhode Island Red, has been bred over time to look almost identical to the Rhode Island Red aside from its color. The rose combed variation was the only variation of Rhode Island Whites admitted to the standard of perfection originally; however, a variety of Rhode Island Whites with single combs is now a commonly found variation. Their combs, face, wattles and earlobes should be bright red, their eyes reddish-brown, and their beak and legs yellow.
Breed History
Rhode Island Whites were created in Peacedale, Rhode Island, by a man named Mr. Jocoy. Although they were introduced in the early 1900’s and even added to the American Standard of Perfection a short time later, the breed has never gained much popularity. It reached its highest population in the 1960’s and has since declined so dramatically that there are now fewer than 3,000 birds existing in the United States.
