Breed Traits

Delawares are notoriously quick to feather out as chicks, and fill out as adults. They are an excellent dual purpose breed, and are easily kept in home flocks with their calm and friendly nature. The Delaware can be used in crosses with Rhode Island Red or New Hampshire Red roosters to create a Sexlink, offspring that can be sexed at birth by the coloration of their down.

Breed History

The Delaware, originally dubbed the Indian River, was developed in 1940 in Delaware by a man named George Ellis who crossed Barred Plymouth Rocks with New Hampshire Reds and produced a small number of sports, or chicks that had different coloration than their parents.
