Breed Traits
A true bantam, the Belgian Bearded D'Uccle weighs in between 22 oz for females and 26 oz for males. They have distinct vulture hocks, heavily feathered shanks and toes, and face muffling that includes ear muffs and a full beard. Their wattles are very small or non-existent, which is preferred.
Breed History
The Belgian Bearded D'Uccle originated in the municipality of Uccle in Belgium, bred for the first time by Michel Van Gelder. The first variation accepted into the American Poultry Association in 1914 was the Mille Fleur, a rich brown feather pattern including white spangles and greenish black stripes which intersect them. The color was so popular, that the bird is sometimes still referred to as a Millie or a Mille Fleur.
